Windows XP/Vista: Restoring Network icons in System tray

What to do when the network icon does not display in the System Tray?

To restore the Network icons in the System tray, follow these steps:

  1. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Classes > Local Settings > Software > Microsoft >Windows > CurrentVersion > TrayNotify.
  2. Right-click IconStreams, then click Delete.
  3. Right-click PastIconsStream, then click Delete.
  4. On the desktop, right-click the taskbar, then click Start Task Manager, go to the Processes tab, click to highlight explorer.exe, then click End Process.
  5. Go to the Applications tab in the Task Manager window, hit New Task and type 'explorer.exe'. Click OK. Explorer will now relaunch and your network icons in the System Tray should return.
